IAED Emergency Telecommunicator (ETC) Certification Practice Test

TTY stands for Teletypewriter, which is a communication device that enables text-based communication over telephone lines. Originally developed for use by the deaf and hard of hearing community, TTY machines transmit typed messages, allowing users to communicate without needing to rely on sound. This device plays a crucial role in providing accessibility for individuals with hearing impairments, enabling them to interact with the phone network effectively.

The other options do not accurately define TTY in the context of communication devices. Television Typewriter and Telecommunications Type do not relate to the function or purpose of a TTY, while Tonal Template Yield is unrelated terminology that does not have a recognized place in communication device terminology. Hence, Teletypewriter is the correct and established term in this context.
